Mushroom Soup Recipe

Mushroom soup is a savory and comforting dish made primarily from mushrooms, broth, and various other ingredients. It is a popular and versatile soup enjoyed in many cultures around the world.

Mushroom soup typically includes mushrooms as the main ingredient. Common varieties used include button mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, or wild mushrooms for a more robust flavor. Other ingredients often include onions, garlic, broth (vegetable or chicken), herbs (such as thyme or parsley), and sometimes cream for added richness.

The flavor of mushroom soup is earthy and rich, thanks to the umami-packed mushrooms. The addition of aromatic ingredients like garlic and onions enhances the overall taste. The choice of herbs contributes to the soup's depth and complexity.

Mushroom soup can have different textures, ranging from a smooth, velvety consistency to a chunkier, more rustic feel, depending on how it's prepared. Some recipes call for blending the soup to achieve a creamy texture, while others retain the mushroom pieces for a heartier feel.

There are countless variations of mushroom soup, reflecting regional preferences and personal tastes. Some recipes incorporate other vegetables, such as potatoes or leeks, while others might include barley or rice for added substance.

Mushroom soup can be a nutritious option, especially if prepared with a balanced combination of ingredients. The addition of cream can increase the calorie content, so variations with less or no cream are also popular for those seeking a lighter option.

Mushroom soup can be served as a starter, a side dish, or even as a main course. It pairs well with crusty bread or crackers. The soup's versatility allows for creativity in presentation and garnishes, such as a drizzle of truffle oil, a dollop of sour cream, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups (946ml) chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup (237ml) heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves (fresh or dried)

Instructions of Making Mushroom Soup:

  • Take a large pot and melt the butter over medium heat in it. Add the chopped onions and cook until they become translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms to the pot. Cook until the mushrooms release their moisture and become golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour now over the mushroom mixture. Stir well to coat the mushrooms. Cook for 2-3 minutes more  to remove the raw taste of the flour.
  • Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth gradually to the mushroom mixture, stir it continuously to avoid formation of any lumps. Now bring the mixture to a simmer and  cook for about 10 minutes more, to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Reduce the heat to low, and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes and don't forget to stir occasionally.
  • Season the soup with salt, pepper, and thyme according to your taste preferences.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender to puree the soup to your desired consistency.
Serving of Mushroom Soup:
  • Serve the creamy mushroom soup hot, garnished with chopped parsley if desired.
